Intel Will Spin First Dedicated Processor for Android/Linux

Posted on September 20, 2012 by Syauqi Wiryahasana
According to reports from ITworld and ZDNet, Intel has said that it is now planning a variant of the Atom Z2760 (code-named Clover Trail) System-on-Chip (SoC) that will run Linux or Android-based operating systems. The chip was originally designed specifically for Windows 8 tablets. However, the company hasn't provided any further product details or intended target markets. Intel had caused quite a stir last week when it said that there will be no Linux support for Clover Trail. Since the SoC was developed for Windows 8 tablets, it offers new sleep states that Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 operating system can take advantage of. However, there have already been indications of a Clover Trail variant called Clover Trail+ which is supposed to support Android; but, according to a leaked presentation slide, this variant is intended only for smartphones. It therefore remains unclear whether Intel was talking about Clover Trail+ or whether the company is planning another Clover Trail variant designed for Android tablets. via H-Open
