Linux News Today: Canonical Calls for Developers to Contribute to Its Ubuntu Convergence Design

In a very lengthy article published recently, Canonical’s Lead Designer Jouni Helminen informs the world about the latest progress of the Ubuntu convergence, obstacles, challenges, and the road ahead.

As you may know or not, Canonical is working hard these days on the next-generation of the Unity user interface used on the Ubuntu Linux operating system, Unity 8, which is already used with success on the company’s latest Ubuntu-powered devices.

The Unity 8 user interface is the key to the success of the Ubuntu convergence, and Canonical needs more developers and designers to contribute to the design of various converged applications, either by porting existing apps or building new ones.

“It is an exciting time as we’re starting to see more and more of the new, convergence-enabled UI toolkit and features for Unity 8 come to life,” said Jouni Helminen. “At the same time, we want to help people write or port more applications to our platform.”

Classic X11 apps are already running on Unity 8

The progress of the Ubuntu convergence accelerates at a fast pace, and on this occasion, we would like to bring to your knowledge that classic X11 applications like Firefox, GIMP, or LibreOffice are already running on the new Unity 8 user interface.

The new award-winning BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition tablet proves just that, but they don’t look like all the other converged apps, and there’s need for skilled developers to modernize them using the Ubuntu UI Toolkit.

In the respective article, you can find all the details you need to know about the applications that are already converged for the Unity 8 user interface, and what Canonical needs to complete its Ubuntu convergence vision.

Below we’ve also attached a gallery with the Music, Mail, and Calendar converged apps and how they look on the phone, desktop, and tablet, which Canonical hopes to be good examples for those who want to help them port other apps or develop new ones.
