The developers of the cross-platform and open-source Unvanquished first-person shooter game announced earlier today that immediate availability for download of the Alpha 44 build.
According to the release notes, Unvanquished 44 Alpha includes a great number of new features and improvements to the gameplay. It would appear that the devs decided to take a new, experimental approach to how they code the game, implementing or removing features all the time until the final build of the game gets exactly how users wanted.
Among some of the recent changes, we can mention the removal of the credit system, unlocked buildings from the get-go for both teams, anti-camping support for reducing the momentum and fund rewards, drastic simplification of the momentum system, the ability to build anywhere, removal of stamina, simpler locational damage, as well as build point pools. These can be toggled with cvars.
“The primary focus this month has been on gameplay modifications by Norfenstein that we have been testing at each of our Sunday development games. Some of these modifications are quite drastic indeed! We are taking a very experimental approach to game coding right now, with features liable to be added or removed at any time,” reads the announcement.
The first Component-Based Software Engineering merge
In addition to the changes mentioned above, the Unvanquished developers inform us that they also managed to merge the first Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE) engine-like feature for the game code. This will help them port the code from C to C++ programming language more easily.
