How to Install Ethernet Drivers Dell Inspiron N4010 on Ubuntu 10.04

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04-64 bit ( Lucid Lynx ) on my Dell Inspiron N4010 laptop. I’m unable to detect my wired ethernet. 😡

I tried searching for it extensively but I think I was unable to make sense out of the posts already present. I know this has something to do with the need to install the correct drivers. I Also posting the output of few popular commands which I’m sure I would be asked to execute.

Ok, base on this talks, finally i have the solution:

My ethernet hardware seems to be quite new and doesn’t have a driver built into Ubuntu as of yet. However, there’s a driver included in the compat-wireless stack that you can use (I have no idea why they included an ethernet driver in compat-wireless, but according to these emails, someone did).

To download, compile and install the driver, first go to http://linuxwireless.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6 and download the file named “compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2” (you can’t download it in the terminal because of anti-hotlinking). Save it to your desktop. Then run these commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential
cd ~/Desktop
tar -xjvf compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2
cd compat-wireless*
scripts/driver-select atl1c
make
sudo make install

Then reboot the Lucid. Hopefully your ethernet will work automatically after reboot; if not, run:

sudo modprobe atl1c

And Yo !! Wired ethernet is now up n running !!

  1. Hi. I have the same problem with my ethernet on my 4010.
The suggestions here look fine. However, when I followed up to line 6, I received an error:

    hoda@laftof:~/Programs/compat-wireless-2010-06-23$ scripts/driver-select atllc
    Processing new driver-select request…
    Backing up makefile: Makefile.bk
    Unsupported driver

Do you have any suggestion why my driver is not supported?

    Thanks so much.
    Best.

  2. Sorry, I just went crazy. a misspelling led to that error.
    Now I have it installed.
    I really appreciate your help.
    Kind regards.

  3. Hi. I’m back again with a problem.
Last time, I successfully installed my eth1, and got connected through that. But, as soon as I shut down the laptop, it was not identified once again.
I repeated the entire above list of commands, and this time, I do not have it identified.

can you please help me with this?
    Best.

  4. Thanks for your reply.
Actually, the code was installed successfully. I mean, no error messages etc. Hence the code does not seem broken.
there is possibly some conflicts with this driver and new release of Ubuntu.
    Do have more suggestions?
    Cheers.

    1. I think it’s same on OpenSUSE. You can try installing the linux build essential package for OpenSUSE first, then compile the driver from tarball.

  9. Please, you can explain me in detail the steps for do that, and how can i conect my computer to the internet using a wireless coneccion in opensuse 11.3, i will appreciate that very much.

    thanks

  10. i will like to know what linux you recommend me to install in the dell inspiron n4010 , opensuse or ubuntu , also ,i work with some theoretical software for quantum chemistry, and programation like fortran C++ etc,

thank you very much for the advise.

  11. Hi!

    How did you install Ubuntu?
Thanks, I hope you help me, because I work with Linux and I can’t now ;(
