Linux News Today: First Look at the Official Fedora 23 Cinnamon Edition – Screenshot Tour
Finally! The first-ever official Cinnamon edition of the acclaimed Fedora Linux computer operating system has been announced today, November 10, 2015.
Some of our readers might remember the fact that an official Cinnamon spin of Fedora 23 was proposed a while ago, and it might be just what the doctor ordered for many Fedora Linux users out there, as a powerful alternative to Fedora Workstation.
Until today, Fedora Project has offered users spins of the latest Fedora Linux operating system with some of the most used desktop environments, including KDE Plasma, GNOME (Fedora Workstation), Xfce, MATE/Compiz, LXDE, as well as Sugar.
But now, you can finally download Live ISO images of Fedora built on top of the innovative and traditional desktop environment created by the experienced folks behind the Linux Mint project, Cinnamon, a clone of the GNOME Shell user interface.
Inside Fedora 23 Cinnamon
We’ve downloaded Fedora 23 Cinnamon to give you, guys, a quick look at its features and installed applications, as well as to create a screenshot tour for your viewing pleasure (see the gallery attached at the end of the article if you’re in a hurry).
The first things you’ll notice when running the distribution are the traditional, default layout of Cinnamon, which has been kept intact, and the great collection of installed software, among which we can mention the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, and LibreOffice office suite.
Among other pre-installed applications, we can mention the HexChat IRC client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Transmission BitTorrent client, Shotwell image viewer and organizer, Parole Media Player video and audio playback software, Brasero CD/DVD burning utility, as well as GNOME Terminal.
Unfortunately, Cinnamon fans will be disappointed to find out that the version of Cinnamon in Fedora 23 is currently at 2.6.13, despite the fact that Cinnamon 2.8 was released a couple of weeks ago and it is currently at version 2.8.3. Download Fedora 23 Cinnamon Edition right now from Softpedia.
