Linux News Today: Happy Birthday, Linus Torvalds!
The Linux community has a couple of very important dates to celebrate, the release of the Linux kernel on August 25, 1991, and the birthday of Linus Torvalds on December 28, 1969.
Linus Torvalds is now one of the most influential people on the planet, and he doesn’t really like this role. If his appearances and speeches have taught us anything, it is that he doesn’t like the spotlight and that he’s still interested in good code for the Linux kernel.
The fact that the Linux community might look with interest towards his birthday on December 28 is probably not something that he would enjoy, but at this point, he’s way too famous and well known to be able to do anything about it. The Linux Foundation has been quick to announce it to the world that it’s his birthday, so the avalanche of birthday wishes is starting.
Linus is still the man
Linus Torvalds managed to remain pretty much in charge of the Linux kernel, and he’s still the one who decides what’s happening and what’s being merged. In fact, on December 27 he just released a new RC for the latest version of the kernel. He’s not even stopping for his birthday.
The Linux kernel that he created has pretty much taken over the world, and it’s present in everything that surrounds us. It continues to expand its reach every day, so it’s not really surprising that we choose to celebrate the birthday of its creator.
Linus Torvalds was born on December 28, 1969, in Helsinki, Finland. He’s now living in Oregon (of all places), United States, from where he controls with an iron fist the destiny of the Linux kernel, the biggest cooperating project on the planet that gathers thousands of developers.
With that in mind, we wish Linus Torvalds a Happy Birthday!
