Linux News Today: KDE Plasma 5.4 Lands in Kubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf)
Marco Parillo had the pleasure of announcing that the recently released KDE Plasma 5.4 desktop environment just landed in the development release of Kubuntu, Wily Werewolf.
As reported by Softpedia, the KDE community announced Plasma 5.4, the feature release for August, a few weeks ago, a version that brings with it a cool new alternative launcher and many other goodies for KDE fans.
While this comes as great news, most Kubuntu users would like to see the KDE Plasma 5.4 desktop environment implemented in the current stable release of the operating system, Kubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet).
At the moment of writing this article, there’s no official information regarding the implementation of KDE Plasma 5.4 in Kubuntu 15.04, but it might be backported sooner than you might think.
Those of you who have the current development build of Kubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) installed can get the new KDE Plasma 5.4 desktop environment release by applying a general software update to their installations.
Kubuntu 15.10 arrives on October 22 with KDE Plasma 5.4
Kubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) is currently in development, with a first Beta build seeded to testers worldwide approximately a week ago. The development cycle will continue with a Final Beta build scheduled for release on September 24.
The final release of the Kubuntu 15.10 operating system will be unveiled to users worldwide later this year, on October 22, 2015, most probably built on top of a maintenance release of the KDE Plasma 5.4 desktop environment, such as 5.4.2.
KDE Plasma 5.4 will have three maintenance releases, KDE Plasma 5.4.1, which will be released in two days from today, on September 8, KDE Plasma 5.4.2, scheduled for October 6, and KDE Plasma 5.4.3, due for release on November 10.
As expected, Kubuntu 15.10 users will get all these point releases of KDE Plasma 5.4, but they might not be backported to Kubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet). We will keep you informed on the matter as soon as we hear something official from Kubuntu.
