Linux News Today: Kubuntu 15.10 Beta 2 Screenshot Tour – Possibly the Last Release as Official Flavor

Kubuntu 15.10 Beta 2 has been released last night, and we can even say that it was a little bit delayed, but the important thing is that we can now get to take it for a spin and see what’s been changed.

When people think about KDE, they usually also have Kubuntu in mind. The developers of the distro have always pushed the latest KDE packages into the OS, and it’s a good way of checking what’s been happening with this desktop environment. What’s even more interesting is the fact that very often new versions of KDE are backported to already-stable Kubuntu distros, and that’s always a good thing.

There is also a piece of information about Kubuntu 15.10 that has been neither confirmed nor rebutted since the development cycle has started. In the first announcement, the Kubuntu devs said that there was a good chance that it was the last version with the OS as an official flavor and that they would continue to provide support. The subsequent announcement said nothing about this and it remains unclear whether something has changed in that regard.

Kubuntu 15.10 will ship with the latest Plasma

Everyone is dying to know how the latest KDE Plasma feels and works in the new OS. For me, it crashed at first boot, but this is still a Beta, and a lot of stuff needs to be fixed, still. As it stands right now, KDE Plasma 5.4.1 will be the default version used, alongside KDE Applications 15.08. All the other apps that you would expect to find, like LibreOffice or Firefox. Interestingly enough, the old Konqueror browser is not included in this image.

As usual, you can download Kubuntu 15.10 Beta 2 right now from Softpedia and give it a spin. It’s still under development, so installing this on a production machine is not advisable. This version suffers from the same Ubiquity bug like all the others, so you should install it without an Internet connection. Also, for some weird reason, the option to create a new folder is missing from the Dolphin file manager.
