Linux News Today: Linux Kernel 3.10.89 LTS Is a Small Release That Adds Xtensa Improvements

Immediately after announcing the general availability of Linux kernel 4.2.1 and Linux kernel 4.1.8 LTS, Greg Kroah-Hartman informed us all about the eighty-ninth maintenance release of the long-term supported Linux 3.10 kernel series.

According to the appended shortlog, Linux kernel 3.10.89 LTS appears to be a fairly small release that adds various improvements to the Xtensa and x86 hardware architectures, fixes an issue in the High Performance File System (HPFS), and updates several drivers, especially for things like CLK, HID, iiO, PCI, TTY, and USB. In numbers, Linux kernel 3.10.89 LTS changes 24 files with 160 insertions and 51 deletions.

“I’m announcing the release of the 3.10.89 kernel. All users of the 3.10 kernel series must upgrade,” says Greg Kroah-Hartman, the maintainer of the Linux 3.10 LTS kernel. “The updated 3.10.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.10.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary.”

All users of the Linux 3.10 kernel series must upgrade

As is usually the case with any new kernel release of a long-term supported (LTS) branch, it is recommended that you upgrade your GNU/Linux operating system’s kernel packages as soon as possible, or more precisely as soon as the new kernel version arrives in the default, official software repositories of the respective distribution. Advanced users can download the new version and compile it by hand if they’re in a hurry.

With this occasion, we’re informing GNU/Linux vendors to update their Linux 3.10 LTS kernel packages to version 3.10.89 immediately. For that, they will need to download the Linux kernel 3.10.89 LTS sources right now via Softpedia or directly from the kernel.org website, and start compiling/optimizing the kernel. More details about the fixes that landed in Linux kernel 3.10.89 LTS can be found in the diff from Linux kernel 3.10.88 LTS.
