Linux News Today: Linux Kernel 4.2.3 Is Out with Open vSwitch and IPv6 Fixes, Updated Networking Drivers

After only 4 days from the release of the second maintenance version of the Linux 4.2 kernel series, Greg Kroah-Hartman comes today, October 3, with news about the release of Linux kernel 4.2.3.

Looking at the appended shortlog, we can notice that the third point release of Linux kernel 4.2 adds various networking improvements, especially for the IPv6 and IPv4 network protocols, as well as for the Open vSwitch multilayer virtual switch, but also for NetLink, Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP), Bridge, and Scheduler.

Networking seems to be the strong point of this release, because Linux kernel 4.2.3 updates multiple networking drivers, mostly Ethernet stuff like Mellanox MLX4, Marvell, Freescale, and Altera, as well as Dynamic Search Algorithm (DSA), Fast Ethernet PHY, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), and MacVTap.

“I’m announcing the release of the 4.2.3 kernel. All users of the 4.2 kernel series must upgrade,” says Greg Kroah-Hartman. “The updated 4.2.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-4.2.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary.”

All users of Linux kernel 4.2 must update as soon as possible

In numbers, Linux kernel 4.2.3 modifies 33 files with 446 insertions and 185 deletions. Greg Kroah-Hartman recommends all users of GNU/Linux operating systems powered by the Linux 4.2 kernel branch to upgrade to Linux kernel 4.2.3 as soon as possible, or more precisely as soon as the new version arrives in the default software repositories of their distributions.

OS vendors and advanced users who want to install the new kernel version themselves, can download the Linux kernel 4.2.3 sources right now from either the kernel.org website or via Softpedia by clicking the aforementioned link. More details about the changes implemented in Linux kernel 4.2.3 can be found in the official release announcement.
