Linux News Today: MediaTek Announces Open-Source IoT Development Platform That Runs OpenWrt Linux
The Taiwanese pioneering fabless semiconductor company MediaTek Labs announced the general availability of the latest addition to its LinkIt portfolio, the MediaTek LinkIt Smart 7688 development platform.
Designed from the ground-up to enable rapid development of advanced Wireless-based devices like cloud-based Wi-Fi gateways, IP cameras, smart appliances, as well as various surveillance products, the MediaTek LinkIt Smart 7688 development board has been engineered to provide developers with a wide range of programming options.
MediaTek’s new LinkIt Smart 7688 development board comes in two editions, the MediaTek LinkIt Smart 7688 and MediaTek LinkIt Smart 7688 Duo. While the former includes an MT7688AN-based microprocessor unit, the latter is compatible with the Arduino open-source electronic prototyping platform.
Both boards come with 128MB RAM and 32MB internal flash storage, as well as built-in Wi-Fi and all the necessary ports for connecting peripherals. They are fully compatible with open-source software, supporting a broad range of Linux kernel-based operating systems, such as OpenWrt, and multiple programming languages.
“MediaTek Labs is focused on stimulating innovation in IoT and is pleased to extend its LinkIt family of development platforms to the open-source and web developer communities, enabling broader product development for a more connected world,” said Marc Naddell, VP of MediaTek Labs.
Designed for OpenWrt and Arduino developers
The MediaTek LinkIt Smart 7688 development board has been designed specifically for OpenWrt and Arduino developers, allowing them to create native C apps for Internet of Things devices, as well as to build software for the microprocessor unit (MPU), using the OpenWrt SDK and Arduino IDE development software respectively.
Both editions of the MediaTek LinkIt Smart 7688 development board are available for purchase today. While the MediaTek LinkIt Smart 7688 edition costs $12.90 (€12.18), the MediaTek LinkIt Smart 7688 Duo model costs $15.90 (€15). You can buy them right now from Seeed Studio.
