Linux News Today: Samba 4.3.0 Arrives with Support for Apple's Spotlight, Logging Improvements

Samba, the world’s most used open-source software solution for accessing shared Windows folders over a network from GNU/Linux and Mac OS X operating systems, has reached version 4.3.

According to the official release notes, Samba 4.3.0 is a major release that adds numerous new and attractive features, such as support for Apple’s Spotlight search engine via an integration with GNOME’s Tracker semantic data storage for desktop and mobile devices utility, as well as support for logging to multiple backends.

An all-new FileChangeNotify subsystem has been introduced in Samba 4.3.0, which has been designed from the ground up to use a central daemon per node for handling every FileChangeNotify request and event by an asynchronous message from smbd to the notify daemon.

“Two changes to the configuration were required for this new subsystem: The parameters ‘change notify’ and ‘kernel change notify’ are not per-share anymore but must be set globally. So it is no longer possible to enable or disable notify per share, the notify daemon has no notion of a share, it only works on absolute paths,” reads the announcement.

There’s now better support for trusted domains

Among other interesting features, we can mention a brand new SMB profiling code, improvements to the DCE/RPC (Distributed Computing Environment / Remote Procedure Calls) man-in-the-middle detection for Kerberos, enablement of SMB signing in winbindd by default, SMB 3.1.1 support, better support for trusted domains, as well as new smbclient and rpcclient subcommands.

Last but not least, Samba 4.3.0 comes with improved sparse file and cross-compiling support, a new sparsely connected replia graph, new modules, configurable Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol support, CTDB (Clinical Trial Database) logging improvements, support for all seven FSMO roles in samba-tool, better CTDB NFS support, smb.conf improvements, while it also removes the experimental NTDB library.

Download Samba 4.3.0 for GNU/Linux and Mac OS X operating systems right now from Softpedia. Please keep in mind that we can only provide source packages, which means that you will need to compile the software by hand. If this is unacceptable, please wait until the Samba packages are updated to version 4.3.0 on your operating system of choice.
