Linux News Today: antiX 16 Linux to Land Soon with Custom 4.4.10 Kernel, Firefox ESR by Default

Today, June 14, 2016, the developers behind the Debian-based antiX Linux operating system have published a brief announcement to inform the community about the availability of the Release Candidate build of antiX 16.

antiX 16 Linux has been in development for the past four months, since February 20, 2016, when the project’s developers released the first Alpha-labeled ISO images, based, of course, on the Debian Sid operating system.

One Alpha build and two Beta releases have been seeded to public beta testers since then, in which antiX 16 received many improvements, updated packages, and dozens of exciting new features that are coming soon to a computer near you.

antiX 16 is now up to the RC (Release Candidate) state, which means that the development cycle is almost over, and the devs are preparing to unveil the final builds, which will ship with a custom, long-term supported Linux 4.4.10 kernel.

antiX 17 to be based on Debian GNU/Linux 9 “Stretch”

Also, it looks like Mozilla Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) is now the default web browser for antiX 16, which will still use udev as eudev is not ready for mainstream, causing various delays on recent hardware. eudev will be ready for antiX 17, which should be based on Debian GNU/Linux 9 “Stretch.”

“This is just a newsflash just to let users know that we think we are very close to releasing antiX-16,” said the devs. “eudev is available in the repo, but we will not ship with it for this release. We aim to fully use eudev for antiX-17 Stretch versions.”

antiX 16 Release Candidate 1 is now available for download as full, installable CD-size ISO images for both 64-bit and 32-bit platforms. However, please note that this is still labeled as a pre-release version, not yet suitable for production use.
