Linux News Today: Bodhi Linux 4.0 to Be Based on Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS, Enlightenment's EFL 1.18

Jeff Hoogland, developer and creator of the Ubuntu-based Bodhi GNU/Linux operating system, informs the community about a few important facts related to the upcoming Bodhi 4.0.0 release.

Back in March 2016, we reported on the availability of the Bodhi 3.2.0 update for the GNU/Linux distribution, as well as on the fact that development had started on the next major version, Bodhi 4.0.0, which is expected to hit the streets sometime in the month of August.

Since then, we’ve heard nothing from Jeff Hoogland and the development progress of Bodhi 4.0.0, which will be based on Canonical’s Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system. But now it looks like a pre-release Alpha version should happen soon, around the date of July 18, after EFL (Enlightenment Foundation Libraries) 1.18 hits Alpha stage of development.

“Last month I hinted at the first Bodhi 4.0.0 pre-release happening soon, but then June came and went with no more news. One of my goals for the 4.0.0 release is to realign our core Enlightenment Foundation Libraries with the latest upstream release,” said Jeff Hoogland. “Their 1.18 release has been pushed back for several weeks due to the number of things it is integrating and ideally I would like to include this release by default in Bodhi 4.0.0.”

Bodhi 4.0.0 Alpha release coming next week

However, a Bodhi 4.0.0 Alpha release will be available next week even if Enlightenment delays its EFL 1.18 Alpha build, with the current 1.17.x versions of the EFL and Elementary packages for the Enlightenment desktop environment, on which Bodhi’s Moksha interface is based. The even greater news is that Bodhi 4.0.0 will be based on Canonical’s upcoming first point release for Xenial Xerus, Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS.

We will have more details about the upcoming Bodhi 4.0.0 GNU/Linux operating system next week, after the official launch of the Alpha build. And if you’re using Bodhi 3.2.0, you should be able to update to the Alpha release as soon as it’s out. Of course, Live ISO images for 32-bit and 64-bit computers will be provided as well.
