Linux News Today: Cinnamon 3.0 Desktop Environment to Let Users Rename Battery-Powered Devices

Now that we’ve told you about some of the features that are coming to the Linux Mint 18 operating system in the next few months, the time has come to get a glimpse of the new goodies offered by Cinnamon 3.0.

As reported the other day, the upcoming Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” operating system will be available with the Cinnamon 3.0 and MATE 1.14 desktop environments for the official editions, bringing users a new look and feel based on the Arc GTK theme and Moka icon set.

While you already know everything there is to know about the new features implemented in the MATE 1.14 desktop environment announced last week, it’s time for Cinnamon users to learn about the upcoming features that are about to land in Cinnamon 3.0, whose release date we don’t know yet.

And it looks like Linux Mint project leader Clement Lefebvre has started his usual brief blog announcements to tell us about the incoming Cinnamon 3.0 features, the first one being the ability to rename battery-powered devices in the Power settings of the Cinnamon control center, as requested by users a few months ago.

“And then I noticed my three PS4 controllers were all called ‘Wireless Keyboard’ (Sony doesn’t put any model/vendor information in them),” says Clement Lefebvre in today’s announcement. “And then I noticed my Macbook Pro laptop battery had a really weird name I really didn’t like.”

Two-finger scrolling, new Sound module, and much more

In the coming weeks, we will get more updates on the upcoming Cinnamon 3.0 desktop environment, which we already know will offer the ability to scroll with two fingers for modern touchpads, as well as a brand new sound configuration module.

The current stable version of Cinnamon is 2.8.8, and there’s no sign yet about a preview build for Cinnamon 3.0, except for the latest Git master build. In the coming weeks, more will be revealed about the upcoming Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” operating system and the Cinnamon 3.0 desktop environment, so stay tuned.
