Linux News Today: Cinnamon 3.2 Desktop to Enable Sounds for Notifications, Add New Screensaver

Linux Mint project leader Clement Lefebvre has published a new installation of the Monthly News newsletter to inform the community about the latest happening and upcoming plans for the popular GNU/Linux distribution.

First off, Clement Lefebvre would like to thank all the wonderful people that donated money to the Linux Mint project in the month of July. Then he informs us about the fact that the soon-to-be-released Linux Mint 18 KDE Edition will ship with the SDDM display manager instead of MDM (Mint Display Manager) that’s used in all the other flavors.

Additionally, it looks like the Linux Mint 18 “Sarah” KDE Edition will drop its well-known blue Linux Mint icon for a green one, along with a revamped boot splash screen that’s also being used on the Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce editions. A pubic beta release of Linux Mint 18 KDE is expected to land sometime this month.

“In July, we’ve received $12,753 thanks to the generous donations of 530 people. I’d like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping us fund Linux Mint. During the attacks we were able to purchase additional servers and pay for services without ever worrying about how much things cost,” says Clement Lefebvre.

Cinnamon 3.2 coming soon with new features, Linux Mint 17.x gets a new kernel

Continuing with the excellent Linux Mint news, Clement Lefebvre warns users of the Linux Mint 17.x series of operating systems about the fact that the Linux 3.16, 3.19 and 4.2 kernel branched are now EOL (End of Life), which means that they won’t get new versions anymore. Instead, you should move to either the Linux 3.13. or 4.4 LTS series, which will be supported until 2019.

Lastly, the Linux Mint project leader talks about some of the coolest new features coming to the Cinnamon 3.2 desktop environment, which will be the default for the Linux Mint 18.1 operating system, due for release later in the year. These include sound support for the notifications and a new screensaver written from scratch. Also, in Cinnamon 3.2 you’ll be able to move the clock applet anywhere on the screen.
