Linux News Today: Debian-Based siduction OS Gets New Release Dedicated in Memory of Ian Murdock

The development team behind the Debian-based siduction Linux operating system have announced the release of the siduction 2015.1 development milestone, dedicated to the memory of Ian Murdock, the creator of the Debian Project.

We’ve reported the sudden and unexpected death of Mr. Ian Murdock in the last days of 2015, an unfortunate even that shocked the entire Debian and GNU/Linux communities.

The siduction devs wasted no time and put together a quick release of their Debian-based operating system as a tribute to the passed leader, informing users about the upcoming features of the GNU/Linux distribution.

“With a heavy heart we dedicate this release to the memory of the founder of Debian, Ian Murdock, who passed away on Dec. 28 2015, aged 42. We will try to keep his vision alive,” said the siduction  development team in the announcement.

siduction’s release model will change

Based on Debian Unstable, the upcoming major release of the siduction operating system promises a change in the release model, in the way that the development team will publish siduction flavors with specific desktop environments when they’re ready.

siduction has multiple editions, with the GNOME, KDE, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, LXDE, and LXQt desktop environments. In the past, the devs released all of them at once, waiting for each maintainer to prepare his/her flavor.

This is not the case anymore with feature versions of siduction. When a flavor will be ready, it will be immediately released. As such, siduction 2015.1 Dev comes in noX, X.Org, Xfce, LXDE, Cinnamon, and MATE editions.

In the coming weeks, the team will also release the GNOME, KDE Plasma 5 and LXQt flavors. All versions will have a major change, the enablement of the contrib and nonfree channels, along with a pre-installed nonfree-firmware channel.

These changes will allow users to use their hardware right from the start, without the need to install additional firmware. If you want to test the siduction 2015.1 Dev release, download the ISO images right now from Softpedia.
