Linux News Today: Emmabuntüs Linux Debian Edition Announced in Memory of Ian Murdock

Today, Patrick Emmabuntus has informed Softpedia about the immediate availability for download of the first Beta release of his upcoming Emmabuntüs Debian Edition Linux operating system.

Dedicated to the memory of Ian Murdock, the founder of the Debian Project, and based on the latest Debian GNU/Linux 8.3 operating system, Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 8 Beta is built around the lightweight Xfce desktop environment and includes all the latest software packages for educational use.

While looking pretty much the same as the current stable version, Emmabuntüs 3, which is based on the long-term supported Xubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) distro and has received support itself for a longer period, the new Debian Edition is still lighter and faster, thus perfect for deployment on low-end computers.

“I am pleased to inform you to announce the release of the new Emmabuntüs Debian Edition in Beta release (for the time being only the 32 bits version is available), based on Debian 8.3 distribution featuring the XFCE desktop environment,” says Patrick Emmabuntus in an email to Softpedia.

What’s new in Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 8 Beta

Being based on Debian GNU/Linux, the Debian Edition of Emmabuntüs removes some of the software packages that are pre-installed in Emmabuntüs 3, such as Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird, and replaces them with their libre counterparts, Iceweasel and Icedove. The two Emmabuntüs versions will be complementary.

Among other changes that took place in Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 8 Beta, we can mention the replacement of Ubuntu Tweak with BleachBit, Ubuntu Software Center with Paquets, OnBoard with Florence, and Warmux with Hedgewars. Emmabuntüs Debian Edition 8 Beta is now available for download, but it is only offered for 32-bit computers.
