Linux News Today: ExTiX 16.3 LXQt Distro Is Based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, Ships with Linux Kernel 4.6
ExTiX developer Arne Exton informs Softpedia today, May 30, 2016, about the immediate availability for download of the ExTiX 16.3 LXQt Edition computer operating system.
Based on the Debian GNU/Linux 8.4 “Jessie,” Debian GNU/Linux 9 “Stretch” and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating systems, the new ExTiX 16.3 LXQt distribution ships with the recently released Linux 4.6 kernel and it is built around the lightweight LXQt 0.10.0 desktop environment.
“I have made a new version of ExTiX – The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 16.3 LXQt Live DVD,” said Arne Exton in the announcement. “The original system includes the Desktop Environment Unity (Ubuntu). After removing Unity, I have installed LXQt 0.10.0. My special kernel 4.6.0-extix corresponds to kernel.org’s Linux kernel 4.6.”
Here’s what’s new in ExTiX 16.3 LXQt Edition
Release highlights of the ExTiX 16.3 LXQt Edition operating system include Google Chrome as the default web browser, allowing users to enjoy Netflix movies, BlueGriffon WYSIWYG content editor as an alternative to Adobe Dreamweaver, as well as support for all the available multimedia codecs and file formats for an out-of-the-box audio/video experience.
Popular software projects like the LibreOffice office suite, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, GParted partition editor, Brasero CD/DVD writer, SMPlayer video player, SLIM login manager, and GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) are also installed in ExTiX 16.3 LXQt Edition, along with the Nvidia 361.45.11 graphic driver for a better gaming experience.
For those who want to install the ExTiX 16.3 LXQt operating system on their personal computer, the Ubiquity installer is present, but the live session, which features persistent (you can save files and settings and reuse the OS whenever you want) uses the extix/extix or root/root username and password credentials.
Download ExTiX 16.3 LXQt Edition via our website, where it is distributed for free as a 64-bit, ISO-hybrid image that you can write on either a USB flash driver (needed if you want persistence) or a DVD disc. Arne Exton informs us that the overall ExTiX 16.3 LXQt desktop experience is very stable, and the default language is English.
