Linux News Today: Exton|OS Light Is One of the First Linux Distributions Based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton has informed Softpedia today, February 9, about the immediate availability for download of a new build of his Exton|OS Light computer operating system.

Based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which, of course, is in heavy development at the moment, Exton|OS Light is, in fact, one of the first distributions to adopt the upcoming OS from Canonical. The good news, however, is that it doesn’t use the Unity 7 user interface, nor Ubuntu 16.04 LTS’ kernel packages.

“I’ve made a new extra version of Exton|OS based on upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 (alias Xenial Xerus) 64 bit with only a minimum of packages pre-installed,” reveals Arne Exton for Softpedia. “Exton|OS Light’s Window manager Openbox guarantees lightness and elegance. My special kernel 4.4.0-3-exton, equivalent to kernel.org’s latest stable kernel 4.4.1.”

Built around Openbox

The new build of Exton|OS Light promises to keep things at a minimum, which means that you’ll have a pretty basic and fast GNU/Linux distribution built around the lightweight Openbox window manager, and, of course, running the latest and most advanced Linux kernel branch available right now on the market.

Best of all, Exton|OS Light borrows various elements from the Debian Stretch and Debian Sid series of operating systems, so you’ll get a bleeding-edge distro that you can run directly from the RAM of your PC, or install it on the disk drive if you consider that it’s a keeper.

Exton|OS Light Build 160207 is available for download right now from Softpedia as a Live ISO-hybrid image that you can write on either a USB stick or a DVD disc. Please note that only 64-bit computers are supported for the time being. Check out the gallery below to see Exton|OS Light in action.
