Linux News Today: Fedora 24 Linux Alpha Officially Released, Includes a Preview of GNOME 3.20

Fedora Project, through Remy DeCausemaker, was proud to announce today, March 29, 2016, the immediate availability for download of the Alpha build of the upcoming Fedora 24 Linux operating system.

After being delayed a few times, Fedora 24 Alpha has finally arrived, and it includes a preview of the recently released GNOME 3.20 desktop environment for the Workstation edition, the latest Glibc 2.23 library and GCC 6 compiler collection, FreeIPA 4.3 (Domain Controller role) for the Server edition, and theming improvements.

Unfortunately, Fedora 24 won’t ship with the Wayland session by default for the Workstation edition, but it remains available as an option, and all users are urged to test it and give feedback. Of course, there are many other small under-the-hood improvements for the rest of the Fedora spins, including the ARM and Atomic Host flavors.

“The Fedora 24 Alpha is here, right on schedule for our planned June final release,” said Remy DeCausemaker in today’s announcement. “The Alpha release contains all the features of Fedora 24’s editions in a form that anyone can help test. This testing, guided by the Fedora QA team, helps us target and identify bugs.”

Fedora 24 launches June 7, 2016

The development cycle of Fedora 24 Linux will continue with the Beta, which, according to the release schedule, should be seeded to public beta testers sometime around the date of May 3, 2016. After that, the final release of Fedora 24 will land on users’ computers on June 7, if everything goes according to plan.

But until then, the Fedora developers have a long road before them, implementing new features and updating most of the packages included in the upcoming distribution. You can help them by being an early adopter and downloading the Fedora 24 Alpha build right now via our website.
