Linux News Today: Google Promotes Chrome 48 Browser to the Stable Channel, Fixes 37 Security Issues

Just a few minutes ago, January 20, 2016, Google, through Krishna Govind, was happy to announce the promotion of the Google Chrome 48.0 web browser to the stable channel, for all supported platforms.

Google Chrome 48.0.2564.82, which is the same version that was pushed earlier today to the Beta channel, is now the newest stable version for the cross-platform and popular web browser using by Windows, Mac and Linux users worldwide on both their PCs and mobile devices.

“The Chrome team is delighted to announce the promotion of Chrome 48 to the stable channel for Windows, Mac and Linux,” said Krishna Govind. “Chrome 48.0.2564.82 contains a number of fixes and improvements. Watch out for upcoming Chrome and Chromium blog posts about new features and big efforts delivered in 48.”

At the moment of writing this article, Google didn’t publish any details about the changes that have been implemented in Google Chrome 48.0.2564.82, but tech-savvy users can study the internal log to see what exactly was changed since the previous stable release, Google Chrome 47.0.2526.111.

Google Chrome 48.0 ships with 37 security fixes

According to Google, 37 security issues have been resolved in the Google Chrome 48.0.2564.82 stable release, and among some of the most important ones, we can mention a use-after-free in the PDFium component, an information leak in the Blink engine, a bad cast and multiple vulnerabilities in the V8 engine, as well as an Origin Confusion attack in Omnibox.

Moreover, an URL spoofing has been fixed as well, along with history sniffing with Content Security Policy (CSP) and HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS), a random number generator vulnerability in the Blink engine, and out-of-bounds read issues in the PDFium component.
