Linux News Today: KaOS 2016.03 Linux Released with KDE Plasma 5.5.5, Pacman 5.0, and New Artwork
The developers of the KaOS Linux operating system have announced the release and immediate availability for download of the March ISO update for the rolling distribution inspired by Arch Linux.
KaOS 2016.03 is now the stable ISO of the project, and it includes a lot of goodies, such as the latest KDE technologies, including the KDE Plasma 5.5.5 desktop environment, KDE Applications 15.12.2 software suite, as well as KDE Frameworks 5.20.0.
Slightly new adjustments have been applied to the Dolphin file manager, such as the ability to calculate MD5 checksums for any file, so that you can make sure the ISOs you’ve downloaded from the Internet have not been tempered with.
Moreover, the KaOS devs managed to add KCM (KDE Control Module) for language settings, and implemented a graphical interface for user management, allowing you to create new users, as well as to delete or change the info of existing ones.
“Since the kf5 move there has not been a fully working GUI for user management, there is one added now for KaOS, you will find it under systemsettings, account details,” the KaOS developers have explained in the release announcement for KaOS 2016.03.
The artwork received several enhancements
Besides all the KDE goodies mentioned above, KaOS 2016.03 ships today with redesigned artwork, thanks to contributions from the community. For example, there’s now a new icon theme for both dark and light themes, and the Midna Dark theme got a completely unified look.
Under the hood, KaOS 2016.03 adds Linux kernel 4.4.5 LTS, X.Org Server 1.18, Mesa 11.1.2, Pacman 5.0, Glibc 2.23, Binutils 2.26, GStreamer 1.6.3, PulseAudio 8.0, and MariaDB 10.1.12. The graphical installer, Calamares, has been updated to version 2.1, a release that brings multiple improvements (full changelog in the announcement).
Last but not least, when installing KaOS 2016.03 or updating from a previous release, users will notice that more KDE apps have been ported to the KDE Frameworks 5 and Qt 5 technologies, such as Grub2 Editor, Kjots, KcolorChooser, Keneric, and SqliteBrowser.
