Linux News Today: KDE Neon User Edition 5.6 Launches Based on Latest Stable KDE Plasma 5 Desktop
Ex-Kubuntu leader Jonathan Riddell announced the general availability of the KDE Neon User Edition 5.6 operating system, based on the latest KDE technologies.
Finally! There’s now a user edition of the KDE Neon project, an open source initiative that promises to bring the latest KDE software to PCs, always. KDE Neon is known for being both a layer on top of any Ubuntu or Kubuntu-based operating system, as well as an operating system distributed via installable ISO images.
KDE Neon User Edition 5.6 lets anyone interested in the KDE Plasma desktop environment and other KDE technologies to have the latest versions of said software projects on their personal computers as soon as they are released upstream by the KDE Project. Best of all, the ISO images do not have a version number, as they are generated automatically whenever new KDE Plasma packages are available.
“A continuous integration Jenkins system scans the download servers for new releases and automatically fires up computers with Docker instances to build packages,” said Jonathan Riddell. “We work in the open and as a KDE project, any KDE developer has access to our packaging Git repository and can make fixes, improvements and inspect our work.”
KDE Neon User Edition 5.6 comes with a slim selection of KDE apps
The KDE Neon User Edition 5.6 ISO images have been designed from the offset with the experienced Linux user in mind. They come with a slim selection of KDE applications, thus allowing users to create unique installations containing only the apps they really need, as well as to keep the size of the install mediums as small as possible and avoid cruft.
The KDE Neon User Edition comes four months after the availability of the KDE Neon Developer Edition, which was designed mainly for developers and advanced testers, allowing them to install the current unstable branches of various KDE technologies. Therefore, KDE Neon User Edition 5.6 is based only on stable software, and you can download it right now via its official website.
