Linux News Today: Linux Kernel 3.14.59 LTS Is Out, Brings Btrfs, EXT4, and IPv6 Improvements

After releasing the Linux 4.3.4 and Linux 4.1.16 LTS kernels, renowned kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman informs the world about the release of the fifty-ninth maintenance build of the long-term supported Linux 3.14 kernel series.

Looking at the appended shortlog, which includes the diff from the previous maintenance release, Linux kernel 3.14.58 LTS, we can notice that Linux kernel 3.14.59 LTS is quite a small update that changes 56 files, with 381 insertions and 111 deletions. Of course, this does not matter, as users will still have to upgrade to it as soon as possible.

“I’m announcing the release of the 3.14.59 kernel. All users of the 3.14 kernel series must upgrade,” said Greg Kroah-Hartman. “The updated 3.14.y git tree can be found at: git:// linux-3.14.y and can be browsed at the normal git web browser:;a=summary.”

What’s new in Linux kernel 3.14.59 LTS

Linux kernel 3.14.59 LTS comes with a little something for everyone. It includes updated FireWire, USB and networking (mostly Ethernet, but also PPP, USB and PHY changes), improvements to the Btrfs, EXT4, NFS, JBD2 and OCFS2 filesystems, a few security fixes, as well as an updated networking stack that addresses issues with things like IPv4, IPv6, IrDA, and Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP).

As mentioned, if you’re running a GNU/Linux operating system powered by kernel packages from the Linux 3.14 LTS series, you are urged to update to the Linux kernel 3.14.59 LTS release as soon as possible, or more precisely as soon as the new version arrives in the default software repositories of your distribution. Alternatively, you can manually update by downloading and compiling the Linux kernel 3.14.59 LTS sources right now from the website or via Softpedia.
