Linux News Today: Linux Kernel 3.2.79 LTS Out Now with Small s390, x86, and JFFS2 Improvements

Linux kernel developer Ben Hutchings announced the release and immediate availability for download of the seventy-ninth maintenance release in the Linux 3.2 LTS kernel series.

Looking at the diff from the previous maintenance release, Linux kernel 3.2.78 LTS, we can notice that Linux kernel 3.2.79 LTS is a fairly small update that brings minor improvements to the x86, s390 and MIPS hardware architectures, a few crypto, kvm and mm changes, fixes for many filesystems, in particular, JFFS2, EXT4, CIFS, and HPFS, as well as several core kernel enhancements.

Furthermore, we can notice that the networking stack received multiple improvements as well, especially for the IPv6 and IPv4 protocols, but also for things like the mac80211 framework, and the SunRPC protocol. A couple of wireless changes are also present, also with updates to the ATA, GPU, HID, InfiniBand, IOMMU, MTD, SCSI, Xen, and USB drivers.

“I’m announcing the release of the 3.2.79 kernel. All users of the 3.2 kernel series should upgrade,” said Ben Hutchings. “The updated 3.2.y git tree can be found at: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.2.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: https://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git.”

Linux 3.2 users are urged to update as soon as possible

In numbers, Linux kernel 3.2.79 LTS changes a total of 67 files, with 554 insertions and 294 deletions. If you’re using a GNU/Linux operating system powered by a kernel from the long-term support Linux 3.2 series you are urged to update to the 3.2.79 build as soon as possible, or as soon as the update arrives in the main software repositories of your distribution.

We’re also urging GNU/Linux maintainers to download the sources of Linux kernel 3.2.79 LTS right now via the kernel.org website or from ours, compile and tweak the kernel for their operating systems, and push the new version to the official channels of the respective distro for users to update their installations.
