Linux News Today: Linux Kernel 4.1.27 LTS Is a Small Update with Nouveau and PowerPC Improvements
Linux kernel developer Sasha Levin today, June 23, 2016, announced the release of the twenty-seventh maintenance release of the long-term supported Linux 4.1 kernel series, along with Linux kernel 3.18.36 LTS.
Linux kernel 4.1.27 LTS comes only three weeks from the release of the twenty-sixth maintenance build, which means that it is a pretty small update that, according to the appended shortlog, it changes a total of 37 files, with 288 insertions and 125 deletions. Looking closer at the diff from Linux kernel 4.1.26 LTS, we can notice that it includes only some updated drivers and a few other improvements.
“I’m announcing the release of the 4.1.27 kernel. All users of the 4.1 kernel series must upgrade,” said Sasha Levin. “The updated 4.1.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-4.1.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary.”
Users are urged to update as soon as possible
Linux kernel 4.1.27 LTS brings various small fixes to the PowerPC (PPC), ARM, PA-RISC, and x86 hardware architectures, as well as to the procfs and ecryptfs filesystems, a fix for the mac80211 framework for wireless devices, and various other crypto, KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), and sound drive improvements.
Among the updated drivers, we can mention the Nouveau, Wireless, SCSI, PINCTRL, thermal, CPUFreq, crypto, EDAC, and General-purpose input/output (GPIO) ones. If you’re using a GNU/Linux operating system powered by a kernel from the Linux 4.1 LTS kernel series, you are urged to update as soon as possible to version 4.1.27.
OS vendors are also urged to download the Linux kernel 4.1.27 LTS sources right now from kernel.org or via our website, compile them for their operating systems and distribute the update via the main software repositories for users to be able to upgrade their kernels immediately.
