Linux News Today: Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS Arrives with Refreshed Hardware Support, Many Updates

As part of the Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (Trusty Tahr) announcement, Lubuntu maintainer Simon Quigley has had the great pleasure of announcing today, August 5, 2016, the release and immediate availability for download of Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS.

Being the last maintenance update in the series, Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (Trusty Tahr) is here with an updated graphics stack and a new Linux kernel from the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, thus refreshing the hardware support and allowing users to deploy the Lubuntu distribution on newer, modern PCs.

Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (Trusty Tahr) is one of the fewer official Ubuntu flavors to support the PowerPC (PPC) hardware architecture along with the usual 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i386) ones. The release also brings all the updated software packages that have been pushed to through the Ubuntu repos since Lubuntu 14.04.4 LTS in February 2016.

“The latest and last point release of the Lubuntu Trusty Tahr LTS, 14.04.5, is now available for download. This release includes images for amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit), i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit), and PowerPC,” says Simon Quigley. “Just note that we have a bug affecting PowerPC that affects installing Lubuntu alongside another operating system.”

Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS Live ISOs now available for download

Besides the updated packages, kernel and graphics stack, the Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS release also includes various under-the-hood improvements for keeping the operating system stable and reliable until it reaches end of life on April 2019, as well as numerous workaround and fixes for some of the most annoying bugs reported by users since Lubuntu 14.04.4 LTS.

New Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (Trusty Tahr) Live ISO images for 64-bit, 32-bit, and PowerPC platforms are available for download right now via our website, but are only recommended to those who either want to reinstall their Lubuntu 14.04 installation because of various reasons, or deploy the operating system on new computers.
