Linux News Today: Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition Is Now Ready for Pre-Order
Canonical has just revealed that Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition is now available for pre-order at the measly price of $369.99 (€335).
The new Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition was revealed just last week with the promise that users will be able to pre-order it during the Mobile World Congress 2016 in Barcelona. Since MWC 2016 started today, the promise has been fulfilled and it’s not possible to buy the new phone.
Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition is now the most powerful device powered by Ubuntu out there and it looks like it’s going to remain in this position for quite a while. If you happen to swing by the Mobile World Congress, you will be able to see it and use it at the Ubuntu stand in Hall 3 (booth 3J30).
For now, the phones will only be running a demo version of the OS and Canonical is expected to release full support for the new device with the upcoming OTA-10 upgrade that should land by the end of March.
Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition is the second from Meizu
The previous phone from Meizu was the MX4 Ubuntu Edition and it was a really well-received model. Unfortunately, only a limited number of MX4 powered by Ubuntu were offered for sale, so not a lot of people managed to get their hands on one of those.
Meizu PRO 5 is powered by Samsung Exynos 7420, which is the first chip that uses the 14nm FinFET technology. Also, it features a 5.7inch AMOLED 1080p screen, a 21.16-megapixel rear-facing camera, 32GB of internal memory, 3GB RAM, and a Li-Ion 3050 mAh battery with fast charging.
“When the device goes on sale, it will be exclusively available to buy through Meizu and Canonical’s joint partner JD.com’s global e-commerce platform en.jd.com. JD.com is China’s largest online direct e-retailer, offering a seamless online shopping experience for customers around the world. Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition will be shipped worldwide on its global site,” reads the official announcement.
As you might have noticed, Meizu no longer sells these devices, but that shouldn’t be a problem. Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition is only available for the Chinese and European markets.
