Linux News Today: Mozilla Firefox 46.0.1 Lands in the Ubuntu Repos, but No Sign of Thunderbird 45

Canonical has recently pushed the first point release of the Mozilla Firefox 46.0 web browser to the stable channels for all supported Ubuntu Linux operating systems, along with Mozilla Thunderbird 38.8.0.

Mozilla Firefox 46.0.1 is a small bug fix update to the acclaimed and widely used open-source and cross-platform web browser, patching various security issues discovered by Mozilla’s skillful developers or reported by users since the release of Mozilla Firefox 46.0.

This first maintenance release of the Firefox 46.0 web browser also improves the add-on signing certificate expiration, lets users search in different languages using the search plugin, limits the registration updates for Sync, and addresses the page loading issues reported by users with certain antivirus software.

Both Mozilla Firefox 46.0.1 and Mozilla Thunderbird 38.8.0 updates are now live in the main software repositories of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf), Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) operating systems, so update your OS as soon as possible to install them.

Mozilla Thunderbird 45 is still not ready for Ubuntu

We have to admit that we’re rather disappointed to see that Canonical has updated Mozilla Thunderbird packages to version 38.8.0 instead of the current stable version from the 45.x series. Why Mozilla Thunderbird 45 is not ready for Ubuntu Linux is beyond us and our apprehension, but we do hope that it will soon be available.

Mozilla Thunderbird 45.1.0 is the latest version of the popular, open-source, and cross-platform email and news client used by millions worldwide, which also happens to offer GTK3 support for modern Ubuntu releases, such as Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus). Anyway, until Canonical decides to make Thunderbird 45 available in the Ubuntu repos, you can install a pre-release version using the next instructions.

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-next
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
