Linux News Today: openSUSE Tumbleweed Users Get Latest KDE Goodies, Linux Kernel 4.7 Coming Soon

Today, July 27, 2016, openSUSE Project’s Douglas DeMaio informs the Tumbleweed community about the latest software updates that landed recently in the main software repositories of the rolling release operating system.

Last week, openSUSE Tumbleweed finally received the brand new KDE Plasma 5.7 desktop environment, along with the third and last maintenance update of the KDE Applications 16.04 software suite, and the KDE Frameworks 5.24.0 collection of add-ons for the Qt 5.7 GUI toolkit.

Users also received the Linux 4.6.4 kernel, though openSUSE devs promised to bring the new Linux kernel 4.7 announced by Linus Torvalds on July 24, 2016, in one of the upcoming snapshots for Tumbleweed. However, that didn’t happen just yet because the kernel requires more testing.

“Linux kernel 4.7 will not be in the next snapshot since it is still going through testing,” said Douglas DeMaio in today’s announcement. “There were two Tumbleweed snapshots this week due to some infrastructure issues that slowed the normal Tumbleweed processes.”

Here’s what else landed in the openSUSE Tumbleweed repos

Among other updated components that landed in the openSUSE Tumbleweed repositories, we can mention a new release for GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) 6, promising to fix compile-time issues in the C++ front-end, new versions of Bash, GLibc (GNU C Library), autoyast2, kiwi-config-openSUSE, and python-requests.

Other updated packages include btrfsprogs 4.6.1, Libzypp 16.1.3, yast2-installation 3.1.202, kernel-firmware 20160712, TeXLive 2016, gnome-sessions 3.20.2, python-lxml 3.6.0, purpose 1.1, and virt-viewer 4.0. Therefore, we’re urging all openSUSE Tumbleweed users to update their installations as soon as possible.

Next week, we shall have more news about the latest package versions pushed to the main openSUSE Tumbleweed repos, and, hopefully, the new Linux 4.7 kernel release will be included. In the meantime, openSUSE Leap 42.2 early adopters can test drive the third Alpha build of the upcoming GNU/Linux distribution.
