Linux News Today: Oracle Releases VirtualBox 5.0.18, Adds Initial Support for Linux Kernel 4.6

Just a few moments ago, April 18, 2016, Oracle published a new update for its acclaimed VirtualBox open-source and multiplatform virtualization software, version 5.0.18.

VirtualBox 5.0.18 comes as an upgrade to the previous release, VirtualBox 5.0.16, which has been announced at the beginning of March 2016, and it looks like it adds a few cosmetic changes to the graphical user interface (GUI), several improvements to Linux and Windows hosts, as well as a bunch of other small fixes.

Release highlights include initial support for Linux kernel 4.6, which is currently under heavy development with a fourth Release Candidate (RC) build out the door yesterday, better support for the Linux 4.5 kernel series, as well as the addition of a Linux kernel graphics driver to support GPUs when X.Org Server doesn’t have administrative rights.

Moreover, jumbo frames with bridged networking should work again on Windows hosts, some hardening fixes for Windows 10 Insider builds were added, there’s support for the new naming scheme of NVMe disks for Linux hosts, the drag-and-drop functionality received improvements, and PC speaker passthrough will work better on Linux.

VirtualBox 5.0.18 is now available to download

Continuing, it appears that full-screen mode behavior has been fixed for Mac OS X El Capitan operating systems, the SATA hotplug flag handling should work now when using EFI, deleting of old snapshots will work much better, and VirtualBox can now handle encrypted disk images with SCSI controllers.

There are several other small improvements implemented in VirtualBox 5.0.18, along with fixes for some of the bugs reported by users since VirtualBox 5.0.16, so check the attached changelog for more details.
