Linux News Today: ownCloud 9 Will Be a Cool Release, Says Frank Karlitschek

It looks like the ownCloud developers will have a great year in 2016, as the company’s CTO, Mr. Frank Karlitschek, has just announced on his Twitter account that ownCloud 9 is shaping up really nicely and that it will be a cool release.

We have no doubt about that, especially that ownCloud 8 was a quite magnificent release that brought us fantastic new features like an all-new Favorites section for easy access to your favorite files and folders, support for federated cloud version 2, direct download support, better search functionality, multiple accessibility enhancements, an updated PDF viewer, user management improvements, better updater app, several enhancements to the apps management page, updates to the importing of contacts functionality, as well as many performance improvements.

The ownCloud Mail app

On January 5, the ownCloud developers announced their plans for the ownCloud Mail app, which should receive a new version in the coming weeks, build 0.3, adding the user-requested Image Blocking functionality. Then, they will release ownCloud Mail 0.4 and 0.5 versions, which promise to include some cool stuff, such as grouping of conversations and threads, folder management, the ability to move mails between accounds, alias support, direct upload of attachments, unified inbox, and calendar integration.

ownCloud is considered by many a Dropbox replacement, and it is currently distributed in two editions, ownCloud Community Edition and ownCloud Enterprise Edition. ownCloud usually refers to the server components, the one that needs to be installed on a GNU/Linux operating system and that serves as a self-hosting cloud server, but users can also download the ownCloud Client software on their GNU/Linux, Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows OSes. More details about ownCloud can be found on the project’s website and you can download the latest ownCloud Server and ownCloud Desktop Client versions right now from Softpedia.
