Linux News Today: PuppEX Linux Live CD Now Based on Puppy Xenial, Compatible with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Arne Exton informs us about the availability of a new stable build of its Puppy-derived PuppEX Linux Live CD distribution, version 160822, which is now using the latest kernel and software applications.
PuppEX Xenial 32-bit Linux Live CD Build 160822 is built from LxPup and uses LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as default graphical interface for both the live session and after it’s installed on your PC. However, the new PuppEX release is powered by a custom 4.7.1-x86-pae-puppex kernel based on Linux kernel 4.7.1.
“My newest Puppy derivative is built from LxPup with the LXDE Desktop environment. I have added Google Chrome (for Netflix), Gimp, VLC, Emacs and some development tools,” says Arne Exton in the announcement. “PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB.”
Compatible with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus)
Being based on the Puppy Xenial (Xenialpup) GNU/Linux distribution, PuppEX Xenial is compatible with the binary packages in the .deb file format from the main software repositories of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, which means you’ll be able to install any Ubuntu 16.04 software in PuppEX.
As mentioned above by Arne Exton, PuppEX Xenial Linux Build 160822 Live CD ships with some of the most popular applications, including the VLC Media Player video playback software, Emacs text editor for programmers, GIMP image editor, and Google Chrome web browser for watching Netflix movies and TV shows.
PuppEX Xenial Linux Live CD Build 160822 is available for download right now via our website as a 32-bit ISO image that you can write to either a CD disc or a USB flash drive. The OS can be used directly from the bootable medium or installed locally. The PuppEX system is very fast because it’s designed to run directly from RAM.
