Linux News Today: SlackEX Is Based on Slackware 14.2, Ships with Linux Kernel 4.6.4 & KDE 4.14.21
Today, July 14, 2016, Arne Exton informs us about the availability of a new build of his SlackEX Live Linux operating system, which has been rebased on the latest Slackware release.
Based on Slackware 14.2, powered by the latest and most advanced Linux 4.6.4 kernel with support for the latest hardware devices, and using the KDE Development Platform 4.14.21 that shipped with the KDE Applications 16.04.2 software suite, SlackEX Build 160711 is a 64-bit (x86_64) OS brings support for installation on USB flash drives.
The announcement comes one day after Arne Exton informed us about the availability of a custom 64-bit kernel based on the Linux 4.6.4 kernel for various Slackware-based operating systems, including, but not limited to, Slackware 14.2, Slax, Zenwalk, and, of course, SlackEX.
“I have replaced kernel 4.5.1-x86_64-exton with kernel 4.6.4-x86_64-exton with support for “everything”. Most important is that I have changed repositories from Slackware 14.1 to Current. i.e. Slackware 14.2 (released 160701). KDE is upgraded to version 4.14.21 (latest KDE version),” said Arne Exton.
Adds Mozilla Firefox 47.0.1, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.2.0, and Samba 4.4.5
SlackEX Build 160711 offers a great collection of open-source and free applications. Some of the most popular software are pre-installed, some of which that are currently not available in the main software repositories of the Slackware 14.2 operating system, including Mozilla Firefox 47.0.1, Mozilla Thunderbird 45.2.0, Samba 4.4.5, VirtualBox 5.1, GParted 0.24.0, Google Chrome 46.0.2490.86, GIMP 2.8.10, GSlapt 0.5.3h, and GCC 5.3.0.
Most of the core components of SlackEX have been updated to the latest Slackware-Current version, GRUB2 has been installed as default bootloader, which will be activated after you install the distro on your personal computer, and the Wicd network manager has been replaced with NetworkManager.
