Linux News Today: Steam Now Offers Over 1,800 Games to Linux Users, but Usage Remains Under 1%

After approximately one and a half months, Steam for Linux managed to collect 100 more games for Linux and SteamOS users, as at the moment of writing this article there are exactly 1,801 titles available.

Steam reaching 1,800 Linux/SteamOS games is the good news, but the bad news is that there aren’t many AAA titles available, and, therefore, the usage of Steam for Linux continues to remain very low even in 2016, under 1%.

Even if Steam for Linux passes the 1% milestone, it is still low for such a promising platform, and the reason for this is that most of the gamers won’t switch from Microsoft Windows to Linux overnight, especially when you have so many AAA games.

However, at some point in time, Steam for Linux usage managed to pass the 1% milestone, but for some reason it drop under the 1% mark and it remained there since. Nothing seems to help the growth these days anymore.

Steam Controller and Steam Machines might help

Valve released the Steam Controller, Steam Link and Steam Machine devices back in November 2015, so it has been a little over three months since they’re on the market for gamers to buy, but that doesn’t yet seem to help the adoption and growth.

Some said that Steam Machines does not count yet as a Linux platform, which is totally wrong. Why not? They’re running SteamOS, which is based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system, on which the popular Ubuntu OS is based.

Anyway, we do believe that if the Steam Machines sales are growing in the next months, and if they will finally be counted as a Linux/SteamOS platform, the Steam for Linux usage will pass the 1 percent mark and even go much further. Fingers crossed.
