Linux News Today: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Now Ships with Linux Kernel 4.4.4 LTS, Launches April 21, 2016
The Ubuntu kernel developers have announced their weekly newsletter to inform the community about the latest work done in preparation for the April 21 launch of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system.
The newsletter, which was promoted by Joseph Salisbury of Canonical, documents the rebase of the kernel packages of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, which is currently under heavy development, on the upstream Linux 4.4.4 LTS (Long Term Support) kernel (the latest version being Linux 4.4.5 at the moment of writing this article).
The new kernel version, linux-4.4.0-12.28, has already been pushed to the main software repositories of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS for early adopters and public Beta testers to upgrade and see if everything works as expected. We’ve updated our Xenial installation, so see the attached screenshot for details.
“Our Xenial kernel has been re-based to v4.4.4 and is available for testing in the -proposed pocket of the archive,” stated the Ubuntu kernel devs in the newsletter dated March 11, 2016. “It should promote to -updates shortly. Please test and let us know your results.”
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS kernel freeze currently set for April 7
With this occasion, the Ubuntu kernel developers would like to inform those needing Linux kernel patches pulled into the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) branch to submit them well in advance because the kernel freeze for this cycle is currently set for April 7, 2016.
This way, they can be thoroughly tested to ensure everything works smoothly for the final release of the operating system. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will have its Beta build out the door for public Beta testers on March 24, 2016, and it will launch worldwide on April 21.
Next week, we will be detailing the launch of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) Final Beta, including the opt-in flavors, so make sure that you keep an eye on our Linux section here at Softpedia for all the details you need to know about the most anticipated OS of the year.
