Linux News Today: Ubuntu-Based Escuelas Linux 4.4 Released for Schools as a Windows XP Replacement

The developers of the Ubuntu-based Escuelas Linux educational operating system have informed us today, April 18, 2016, about the release and immediate availability for download of Escuelas Linux 4.4.

The biggest news of the Escuelas Linux 4.4 release is that the OS has been rebased on the recently announced Bodhi Linux 3.2 distribution, which in turn is based on the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating system.

However, it looks like there are so many internal changes that the Escuelas Linux development team declared the 4.4 release as the most important in the history of the project, and it is highly recommended as a replacement for old Windows XP PCs.

But you can also install Escuelas Linux on computers where Windows 8 or Windows 10 is installed much easier, thanks to the UEFI improvements added in the 4.4 release. Additionally, the installation manual has been completely redesigned.

Chromium for 32-bit, LibreOffice 5.1.2, and Mozilla Firefox 45.0

Numerous of the pre-installed packages have been updated to their latest versions at the moment of the release of Escuelas Linux 4.4, and among the most important ones we can mention LibreOffice 5.1.2, Mozilla Firefox 45.0, and Geogebra 5.0.226.

The GParted open-source partition editor utility is also pre-installed in the Escuelas Linux 4.4 ISOs, allowing users to partition their disk drives, formatting disks or partitions, as well as to change volume labels.

As you might very well be aware, Google ended support for Chrome on 32-bit Linux platforms, but this change does not affect Escuelas Linux 4.4, which contains the open-source Chromium 49 web browser on the 32-bit ISO, and Google Chrome 49 on the 64-bit one.

Escuelas Linux 4.4 also borrows Bodhi Linux’s Moksha 0.2 desktop environment as the default graphical interface for new installations. Numerous core components have been updated as well, and many bugs fixed.

Download Escuelas Linux 4.4 right now via our website. Please note that the default language is Spanish, but you can download an English language pack that can be added after installing the distro on your PC.
