Linux News Today: Ubuntu Phones Getting Support for SASL Authentication and PPTP with OTA-10

Canonical’s Łukasz Zemczak published more details about the features that will be implemented in the upcoming OTA-10 software update for Ubuntu Phone and Tablet devices.

On the day of February 26, 2016, the Ubuntu Touch developers have managed to push a large number of updates to the rc-proposed channel, where the development of the OTA-10 update happens right now, which have already been sent to the Ubuntu QA for testing.

Among these, we can notice that with the OTA-10, all supported Ubuntu-powered devices will get a new Online Accounts API that adds support for SASL (Simple Authentication and Security Layer) authentication.

There’s also a new version of the Ubuntu System Settings that makes it possible for the operating system to automatically change to location when there’s no modem available, and an updated Web Browser app that contains multiple bugfixes.

Additionally, the NTP package received a fix for a bug with date-correction, which occurred when the date was set in the future, a bugfix version of the Ubuntu Download Manager component, and a new Address Book app that brings minor visual changes.

PPTP support was implemented in the Indicator Network

Moreover, it looks like Ubuntu Phone/Tablet users will also get PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol) support, along with keyring support to secret agent in the Indicator Network, as well as bugfix release for the qtsystems package.

A new UI palette has been announced for Ubuntu Touch, so we should see some visual changes to all core apps after we install the OTA-10 update, which might hit the streets sometimes at the end of March 2016.

But we shall have more details on that next week, along with details about a release date for the Ubuntu Touch OTA-10 software update. Until then, we wish you a happy weekend!
