Linux News Today: Ubuntu Touch OTA-12 Lands Next Wednesday, OTA-13 Brings Libertine Improvements
The Ubuntu Touch saga continues, and today we would like to inform our readers about some of the latest changes coming in the next major update, the OTA-13, as well as about some good news for the soon-to-be-released OTA-12.
According to Canonical’s Łukasz Zemczak, the testing of the upcoming Ubuntu Touch OTA-12 software update is almost over, and things are looking great. No blockers, and everything works as expected for almost all devices, with a small exception as far as Meizu PRO 5 and BQ Aquaris M10 are concerned, since they need custom tarball re-spins.
However, this an insignificant aspect, considering that the OTA-12 update is on its way to Ubuntu Phone and Ubuntu Tablet owners, coming with multiple improvements and a few new features. When? It looks like the phased-out update should start landing next week, on Wednesday, July 20.
“We expect a new device tarball re-spin for turbo and maybe one small custom tarball re-spin for frieza/cooler this week, but those should not affect our schedule. If everything continues as well as now we should be able to start phasing out the update Wednesday next week,” said Łukasz Zemczak, Canonical Foundations.
OTA-13 development continues with many goodies
In the meantime, the Ubuntu Touch developers are working hard on implementing new features to the next major release, the OTA-13, which should be available this fall, as well as to fix more of those annoying bugs reported by users all the time. For example, Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 will come a big update for libertine, fixing numerous issues.
Other goodies coming to the Ubuntu Touch OTA-13 update are a new indicator-power update for the new repowerd power manager, the addition of emergency numbers for the China Market for Meizu PRO 5 Ubuntu Edition, the Mir 0.23.3 display server, and a new libhybris version with an experimental arm64 enablement and Android 6.x BSP support.
Next week, we will have more details about the Ubuntu Touch OTA-12 update and might be able to reveal the new features implemented just before the Wednesday launch. As expected, the OTA-12 will be seeded as a phased update during a 24-hour period, so not everyone will receive it on the launch day.
