Linux News Today: Vivaldi 1.0 Web Browser Arrives for Linux Users as an Opera & Chrome Alternative

The final release of the Vivaldi 1.0 web browser was launched today, as we reported earlier, and it comes as an alternative to the Opera and Google Chrome browsers for GNU/Linux, as well as Mac OS X and Windows users.

Just like Google Chrome and Opera, Vivaldi is based on the open-source Chromium project, which means that it inherits most of its technologies, offering users the same level of quality and stability while bringing some unique features to the table, some of which we’ve listed below for your reading pleasure.

“We set out on a mission to make web browsers powerful again,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Vivaldi. “So Vivaldi 1.0 is both a throwback and a look ahead. It’s a ‘Modern Classic’ designed to help our users get the most out of all the time they spend with their browser.”

The many features of Vivaldi 1.0

Prominent features of Vivaldi 1.0 web browser include support for stacking tabs if you’re used to surfing the Internet with multiple tabs opened, tab stacking tiling for those with bigger screens, allowing them to see multiple web pages at the same time, as well as support for saving selected tabs into a session for later browsing.

Vivaldi also comes with a Notes tool that lets users mark all the things they think are important for their projects, along with the ability to take screenshots of the pages they visit, and quick commands for accessing most of the browser’s components, including bookmarks, settings, history, and even opened tabs.

Furthermore, Vivaldi features built-in keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures, making web browsing painless and increasing productivity. Of course, a Speed Dial could not have been missed in a modern web browser, so you can quickly access your favorite websites. Folders and Groups are also supported in the Speed Dial.

Another interesting thing about Vivaldi is that it adapts to your needs, not the other way around. It is highly customizable, supports Google Chrome extensions, lets you organize your bookmarks the way you want, and even helps you import those from Opera and Chrome, and comes with support for viewing websites in your Vivaldi sidebar.
