A new major update has been released for the OSMC open-source media center GNU/Linux distribution, bringing all the updates from the upstream Debian Stable software repositories.
Raspbmc, now known as OSMC, is a Debian-based operating system that brings the well-known, open-source and cross-platform Kodi media center software to various embedded devices, including the popular Raspberry Pi, as well as devices like the Apple TV and Vero.
OSMC aims to be a good solution for transforming small appliances into in low-cost HTPC (Home Theatre Personal Computer) setups, boasting the unparalleled Kodi experience and borrowing the latest GNU/Linux technologies from the Debian GNU/Linux project.
“Our June update arrives right on time this month with a ton of improvements as well as some welcome fixes for some long standing bugs. We would like to thank the community for working with us to resolve these issues and for their help in making OSMC even better,” reads the announcement.
Now based on Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 “Jessie”
The latest release, OSMC 2016.06-2, is based on the recently announced Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 “Jessie” distribution, powered by Linux kernel 4.4.12 LTS, and featuring TVHeadend 4.0.9, latest OpenSSL libraries, as well as numerous improvements for developers.
Also new in the OSMC 2016.06-2 update is support for running Vero (late 2014) devices at 1.2Ghz, huge performance improvements to the Wi-Fi drivers to support more wireless cards, support for playing 3D MVC streams, enhancements to MPEG-2 playback and deinterlacing performance for DVD-Videos on Vero 2 devices.
With the new OSMC release, owners of Vero 2 devices will benefit from a better DVB signal quality when watching or recording Live TV streams, and it also looks like the stability of these devices has been increased when used in warm environments. Best of all, the overall system performance has been greatly polished for Vero 2.
Among other new features implemented in OSMC 2016.06-2, we can mention support for support for the Raspberry Pi Zero Revision 2 single-board computer, support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi dongle for AppleTV, support for backing up the /etc/fstab file, and dozens of bug fixes that can be studied in the official release notes.
