Linux News Today: SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 Racing Game Is Out with New AI Support for Soccer Mode

Today, July 1, 2016, after many months of hard work, the development team behind the SuperTuxKart open-source racing game has been more than happy to inform the Linux community about the availability of the final SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 release.

In mid-June, SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 received a Release Candidate (RC) build, which gave users early access to the numerous goodies coming into the final release. Among these, there’s the new AI (Artificial Intelligence) support for the soccer mode, which now offers three arenas under the “Copa Antarctica” Antarctica Cup umbrella.

The first arena is called “Icy Soccer Field,” it has been created by Benau and Samuncle, and is available for anyone. On the other hand, the rest of the arenas, namely “Las Dunas” and “Candela City,” are available only for those who have donated money to the project, as a gift pack.

Additionally, the final SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 release comes the “Antediluvian Abyss” track created by Samuncle, available for everyone as a replacement for the old Subsea track, as well as the “Volcan Island” track created by Ponzino, also made available for free for anyone installing the SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 update.

TTF fonts support landed in SuperTuxKart

SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 incorporates a lot of under-the-hood enhancements in usability, such as support for TTF (True Type Font) fonts, which will ensure that all the characters in the game are available for all supported languages. Moreover, users are now able to record races and ghost replays.

“This release includes a lot of work from Benau, a new developer,” reads today’s announcement. “He finished and significantly improved work on computer opponents in battle mode, and even added the ability to play in teams with and against the computer in soccer mode.”

Unfortunately, SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 is yet another release of the awesome racing game featuring Tux (the virtual Linux mascot) that ships without networked multiplayer functionality, which will require more work from the skillful development team behind the open source project.
