The Mozilla Firefox web browser has landed today, June 9, 2016, in the software repositories of all supported Ubuntu Linux operating systems, on June 8 on the Arch Linux repos, and on June 10 for Solus.
Officially released on June 7, 2016, the Mozilla Firefox 47.0 web browser is not a major release, but it does bring various interesting new features, among which we can mention support for playing embedded YouTube videos using the HTML5 technology when Adobe Flash Player is not detected.
Also, the VP9 video codec is now automatically enabled on powerful computers, providing users with top-notch video playback performance. There are also many security fixes and various other improvements, as well as some new tools for web developers, so please check the Firefox 47.0 release notes for more details.
Ubuntu and Arch Linux users can update to Firefox 47.0 now
It took a couple of days, but the Mozilla Firefox 47.0 web browser is now available and ready to be installed from the main, stable repositories of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf), Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin), Solus, and Arch Linux.
Of course, any other official Ubuntu flavor will also get the new Mozilla Firefox 47.0 web browser, including, but not limited to, Ubuntu MATE, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, and Kubuntu. We’ve also noticed that the Firefox 47.0 packages landed for CRUX Linux users, and it might be available for Solus users too (later edit: Firefox 47.0 landed in the Solus repos).
You can upgrade from Mozilla Firefox 46.0.1 to Mozilla Firefox 47.0 right now. Just use your favorite packages manager, be it either via the command-line (APT, pacman, yaourt, etc.) or a GUI (Synaptic Package Manager, Ubuntu Software, GNOME Software, etc.). The new Firefox 47.0 web browser might also be available for other distros, but we can’t monitor them all, so please inform other readers in the comment section below.
