Linux News Today: Canonical Announces the First Ubuntu Converged Device, the BQ Aquaris M10 Tablet

Posted on February 04, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Today, February 4, 2016, Canonical, the company behind the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux, was excited to unveil the first ever converged device in collaboration with the Spanish mobile manufacturer BQ.

BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition tablet is the world's first Ubuntu-powered tablet device that can also be used as a computer, and with this Canonical has finally achieved its long-held vision of a single, converged personal computing experience. The tablet is powered by the latest Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system, which can be easily converged into a personal computer when connecting to an external LCD.

“We’re bringing you everything you’ve come to expect from your Ubuntu PC, now on the tablet with BQ, soon on smartphones. This isn’t a phone interface stretched to desktop size – it’s the right user experience and interaction model for the given situation. Also, in terms of applications, we have something no other OS can provide: a single, visual framework and set of tools for applications to run on any type of Ubuntu smart device," said Jane Silber, Canonical CEO.

The tablet transforms into a full-featured Ubuntu desktop

Thanks to the latest innovations Canonical implemented into its Ubuntu mobile operating system, the new BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition tablet will provide users with both a true tablet experience and a full-featured Ubuntu desktop one. Ubuntu is now the first and only platform that can achieve full convergence from a single, smart device. Best of all, the BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition tablet ships with some unique features that are not available in the existing Ubuntu Phone devices.

For example, users will be able to view two different apps on the same screen using the device's "side stage" feature. The application's window's are intuitively optimized by the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system to occupy the tablet screen space that they need. Moreover, the tablet will provide its users with smooth window management and multitasking, thin client support, integrated services with desktop notifications, as well as quick access to the most used apps.

A simple and intuitive file manager is provided as well on the new BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition tablet, so you can easily browse, create and manage files. Of course, users will have full access to all the awesome Ubuntu applications that are already available for their Ubuntu Phone devices in the Ubuntu Store, along with unrestrictive access to the underlying operating system for full control.
