Linux News Today: FreeBSD 11.0 Beta 3 Out Now, Final Release Is Expected to Land on September 2

Posted on August 01, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

FreeBSD Project's Glen Barber announced the availability of the third Beta milestone towards the upcoming FreeBSD 11.0 operating system for public beta testing.

Delayed one day, the FreeBSD 11.0 Beta 3 release is the last one for this development cycle, and it promises to squash even more of those annoying issues that have been reported by users since the first and second Beta milestones. Among the changes, we can mention improvements to the libunwind library, and updated locales.

Additionally, it looks like the maximum size of the vt framebuffer has been increased, the bsdinstall installer received multiple updates for prompting users for the date and time during installations, as well as to offer them certain options for hardening the system, and many other core components were updated or fixed.

The third and last Beta release of the FreeBSD 11.0 operating system is available, as expected, for 64-bit, 32-bit, PowerPC (PPC), PPC64, SPARC64, ARMv6, and AArch64 (ARM 64-bit) hardware architectures. However, there's a note from the FreeBSD developers for the ARM and ARMv6 images.

"For convenience for those without console access to the system, a "freebsd" user with a password of "freebsd" is available by default for ssh(1) access. Additionally, the "root" user password is set to "root", which it is strongly recommended to change the password for both users after gaining access to the system," says Glen Barber.

Here's what's coming next for FreeBSD 11.0

You can download FreeBSD 11.0 Beta 3 right now via our website, but please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version, not suitable for use as your daily driver. The development cycle of FreeBSD 11.0 will continue with a Release Candidate (RC) build on August 5, followed by a second and third one on August 12 and August 19, respectively.

The final FreeBSD 11.0 release is set to land on September 2, 2016. Until then, it looks like the entire month of August is pretty busy for the development team behind one of the best BSD operating systems on the market. The release notes of FreeBSD 11.0 are already available if you want to know what's coming in this massive update.
