Linux News Today: Latest Steam Beta Client Update Has More Steam Controller Improvements, Linux Fixes

Posted on January 09, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Valve announced a few minutes ago, January 9, 2016, the immediate availability of a new update for its Steam Beta Client for supported operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux.

The Steam Client Beta Update for January 8 introduces more improvements to the Steam Controller, among which we can mention better streaming compatibility for Gyro, the addition of a new export save system that promises to simplify and unify the exporting of configurations, allowing users to more easily browse and save Public and Private Steam Controller configurations.

Thanks to the new export save system, Steam Controller users can also edit and replace existing configurations wherever they want. Moreover, there's now support for exporting new configuration templates, as well as support for importing and browsing all configurations from any supported game, which might come in handy when you want to use a game's config for another game.

In addition to the above, the January 8 update for the Steam Beta Client improves the responsiveness of the configurator when users attempt to load their personal bindings, and requires Steam Controller users to play games with the configurations they want to publish them to the community for at least an hour.

Big Picture, In-Home Streaming, VR Mode, and Linux improvements

Besides all the Steam Controller goodies mentioned above, the latest Steam Beta Client update addss 5.1 audio streaming support for the In-Home Streaming feature, but only for Windows users who want to stream to other Steam client or to a Steam Link device. Some black screen issues were fixed for In-Home Streaming as well.

On the other hand, the Big Picture more received a fix for a regression introduced by a previous Steam Beta Client update, which made the contents of scrollable panels to not be completely drawn, and patches a crash that occurred when attempting to enable the family view feature.

For Linux users, Steam Beta Client update for January 8 fixes an issue with the validation of local content when using certain filesystems. And lastly, a bug was fixed for the VR Mode feature. All users who are using the Beta channel should receive the update as we speak.
