Linux News Today: Linux Kernel 4.3.5 Is the Biggest Update in the Series, Users Urged to Update Now

Posted on February 03, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

After informing us about the availability of Linux kernel 4.4.1 LTS, Linux kernel 4.1.17 LTS, Linux kernel 3.10.96 LTS, and Linux kernel 3.14.60 LTS, kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman now published details about the fifth maintenance release in the Linux 4.3 kernel series.

Looking at the appended shortlog, we can't help but notice that Linux kernel 4.3.5 is the biggest in the series, changing a total of 172 files, with 1622 insertions and 722 deletions. Improvements include dozens of fixes for the ARM64 (AArch64), PowerPC (PPC) and x86 hardware architectures, but also for the MIPS, ARM, and MN10300 ones.

"I'm announcing the release of the 4.3.5 kernel. All users of the 4.3 kernel series must upgrade," said Greg Kroah-Hartman in the announcement. "The updated 4.3.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-4.3.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Drivers, networking stack and sound updates

Besides the architectures updates, Linux kernel 4.3.5 brings numerous updated drivers, especially for things like IOMMU, HID, InfiniBand, ISDN, USB, Xen, and networking (mostly Ethernet), many sound enhancements, as well as networking stack improvements, including fixes for B.A.T.M.A.N. Advanced, Bridge, IPv4, IPv6, Open vSwitch, Phonet, SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol), and XFRM.

As expected, all GNU/Linux users that run operating system powered by kernel packages from the Linux 4.3 branch are urged to update to the 4.3.5 release as soon as possible, either by waiting for the new version to arrive in the main software repos of their distro or by downloading the Linux kernel 4.3.5 sources from the kernel.org website or via Softpedia and compile it by hand.
