So, as its name might suggest, exGENT is a rolling-release Gentoo-based Live Linux distribution built around the lightweight Xfce desktop environment and based on the latest GNU/Linux technologies.

The last release of exGENT was announced back in December 2014, so for the new build, the developer had to update and compile all the included packages to their latest versions available as of January 23, 2016. As a bonus, Arne Exton has managed to add throw in the recently released Linux kernel 4.4 LTS.

“Since I haven’t upgraded exGENT since 20141227 it now took me four (4) days to upgrade/compile all included packages. If you have a look at Gentoo’s download site ( you will notice that the latest Gentoo live system is from 20140826,” says Arne Exton in an email to Softpedia.

As mentioned, all the pre-installed Gentoo packages have been updated in the new exGENT 2016 Xfce4 Live DVD release, including the desktop environment’s ones, which are now based on Xfce 4.12.1. Among some important applications, exGENT Build 20160123 includes the Mozilla Firefox and Opera web browsers, Oracle VirtualBox virtualization software, GNU Emacs text editor, and many more.

The best thing about exGENT Linux is that is can run directly from a Live USB or DVD medium, and it is surprisingly fast, despite the fact that the ISO image has over 2GB in size and contains numerous apps. Arne Exton claims that it is faster than most Live Linux systems. Download exGENT 2016 Xfce4 Live DVD Build 20160123 right now from Softpedia.
