Linux News Today: OTA-9 Launches Today for Ubuntu Phones, Major Mir 0.19 Update Coming Soon

Posted on January 27, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Canonical will today start pushing the OTA-9 software update we've been talking about for the last few weeks to supported Ubuntu Phone devices, but we're writing yet another article for our readers to inform them about some interesting aspects.

First, we've just been informed by Canonical's Łukasz Zemczak that the OTA-9 images have successfully passed all the tests, which means that they can now release them to the stable channels, starting today, January 27, 2016, but phased during the next 24 hours or so. Second, make sure you check our previous article to see what's new in Ubuntu Touch OTA-9.

One of the most important things you need to know when upgrading to OTA-9 is that not all of you will receive the update today. You might get it on January 28, or even January 29, so you'll need to be patient about it and check for updates on your Ubuntu Phone from time to time. The update will be automatically downloaded and installed, so no worries there.

"Only a quick update e-mail today. OTA-9 images seem to have passed all our expected tests meaning we will be releasing them to the stable channels tomorrow. Excellent work everyone! There will be a proper announcement once the phased upgrades will start," said Łukasz Zemczak, Ubuntu Foundations.

OTA-9.5 hotfix comes next

Now that the work for the Ubuntu Touch OTA-9 update is complete, the devs can concentrate their efforts on the OTA-9.5 hotfix, which we've already reported yesterday that will arrive on February 10, 2016. As such, today they've pushed a new Unity System Compositor update with fixes for convergence, such as support for setting the pointer speed.

A new indicator-sound update has also been released today for the upcoming OTA-9.5 hotfix update, patching an MPRIS controls bug. At the moment of writing this article, the Ubuntu Touch developers are waiting for the major Mir 0.19 display server to land in the repositories, which promises to bring lots of goodies, but more on that tomorrow, after the launch of the OTA-9 update.
